Vespel Machined Parts are custom manufactured by M&P to your exact drawings and specifications.
Custom Vespel Machined Parts
M&P can make custom Vespel machined parts to your specifications or drawings. Because Vespel® is engineered for severe service, it is commonly selected for high-temperature, high-wear, and chemically aggressive environments. Therefore, Vespel® machined components are widely used where long service life and dimensional stability are critical.
Vespel® Material for Machined Parts
Vespel® is a high-performance polyimide material manufactured exclusively by DuPont. Unlike thermoplastics, Vespel® does not melt and can operate continuously from cryogenic temperatures to 550°F (288°C). Additionally, short-term temperature excursions up to 900°F (482°C) are possible in certain applications. Consequently, Vespel® machined parts deliver consistent performance in environments where other materials degrade.
Notable Material Features
Furthermore, Vespel® machined parts offer the following advantages:
-
Excellent temperature resistance
-
High wear resistance, especially in SP-21 grade
-
Dimensional stability
-
Resistance to radiation
-
Extremely low outgassing
-
As a result, reliable performance in vacuum environments
-
Relatively easy to machine compared to other high-temperature polymers
Grades of Vespel Machined Parts
To meet different application requirements, Vespel® is available in several grades. For example, each grade is engineered to balance wear resistance, friction, and mechanical strength.
Vespel® SP-1 Machined Parts
Vespel® SP-1 is the unfilled base resin grade. Because of this, it provides maximum physical strength, elongation, and toughness. In addition, SP-1 offers excellent electrical and thermal insulation properties.
Typical applications include spacers, high-temperature fixtures, valve seats, balls, gaskets, insulators, and seals.
Vespel® SP-21 Machined Parts
Vespel® SP-21 contains 15% graphite by weight. As a result, it delivers increased wear resistance and reduced friction. Therefore, SP-21 is commonly used for bearings, thrust washers, bushings, seal rings, and other wear components.
Vespel® SP-22 Machined Parts
Vespel® SP-22 contains 40% graphite by weight. Consequently, it offers enhanced wear resistance, improved dimensional stability, and a lower coefficient of thermal expansion. In many cases, SP-22 is selected for the same applications as SP-21 when added stability is required.
Vespel® SP-211 Machined Parts
Vespel® SP-211 combines PTFE and graphite fillers. Because of this combination, it provides one of the lowest coefficients of friction across a wide operating range. Additionally, it maintains excellent wear resistance up to 300°F (149°C).
Vespel® SP-3 Machined Parts
Vespel® SP-3 is filled with molybdenum disulfide. Unlike graphite-filled grades, SP-3 performs exceptionally well in vacuum and moisture-free environments. Therefore, it is often used in ultra-high vacuum, dry gas, and aerospace applications.
